Graduate Thesis Guidelines

Checklist

This checklist addresses many of the formatting matters pertinent to thesis preparation. This is just a brief guide to some of the more common formatting errors. It is still necessary to refer to the Thesis Guidelines that are on the web site

Overall:

  • Are your left margins 1 ½ inches, with all others being 1 inch?

  • The paper should be 20 lb weight and at least 25% cotton rag for the two final copies.

  • Type is no larger than 12 point. Times New Roman, Arial, and Courier fonts are acceptable. We recommend no smaller than 10 point.

  • Check spelling and proof read.

  • ** Prior to defense, prepare two copies of the thesis approval page (with proper format) on the paper to be used for your thesis. After you defend your thesis get committee signatures. You will insert these pages in your final copies. You may include a photo copy in your draft review copy.

Preliminary Pages:

  • All preliminary pages will have a 2-inch top margin.

  • All preliminary pages will have roman numerals center bottom.

  • Title page is i. but not numbered.

  • Approval page is ii.

  • Make sure list of figures/tables have correct page numbers and the headings/titles match the text exactly.

  • The word "Abstract" - will be centered, two lines below abstract heading is the thesis title, two lines below thesis title is your name centered. Text of abstract is two lines below that and not more than 150 words.

Text:

  • The major sections usually are:

  •       Introduction
          Literature Review
          Methods and Materials
          Results
          Discussion
  • Text is double-spaced.
