A New China View:
Reshaping the Social Studies Curriculum in Middle and High Schools

Through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad program, Towson University is able to provide an immersion experience in Chinese culture for five weeks this summer for twelve public school in-service teachers. The goal of the project is to develop educators’ intercultural competence and enhance social studies curriculum and instruction on China in secondary education classrooms in U.S.A. Towson University’s (TU) College of Education, in partnership with its College of Liberal Arts and selected public school districts across the nation, will work together to achieve this goal.

The program includes pre- and post-departure activities and a five-week immersion experience in China. The pre-departure communication, planning and orientation will take place in late April through June. The post-immersion activities will be completed by March 2009. For the immersion experience in China from June 30 to July 31, twelve teachers led by two university faculty will complete a travel-study project that features a combination of seminars provided by local experts and scholars, informal meetings, and visits to both historic and contemporary sites that are related to modernization and economic development.
