Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the
United States Department of Education will make 18 to 25 awards
of between $250,000 and $500,000 each (for a twelve month period)
for the creation or expansion of community technology centers
that will provide disadvantaged residents of urban and rural communities
with access to information technology and related training. As
an institution of higher education, Towson University is eligible
to apply to this program; however, the Secretary of Education
is requiring that proposed projects include a partnership with
a community-based organization and a local educational agency
(or a public or private school). Additionally, applicants must
state whether they are proposing a local project (which must include
one or more community technology centers) or a State project (which
must include two or more community technology centers). All projects
proposed must serve students who are entering or enrolled in grades
9 through 12 and who either have academic skills significantly
below grade level or have not attained proficiency on State academic
assessments. Instruction may be provided will school is in session,
provided that is does not require students' removal from class.

Research Travel Grants Program

The Gerald R. Ford Foundation
will make awards of up to $2,000 to support research in the holdings
of the Gerald R. Ford Library. Funds are intended to defray travel,
living, and photocopy expenses of a research trip to the Ford
Library. Selected strengths of the Library's holdings are domestic
affairs and policies, economics, the 1976 presidential campaign,
media relations, White House management and decision-making, congressional
relations, and foreign policy. Grant recipients must begin Ford
Library research within one year of receiving award notice.

Active Living Research

Agency: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Deadline: September 1, 2004
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is accepting
proposals of up to $150,000 total funding for up to two years
for research projects on environmental characteristics and physical
activity in under-studied populations or on the impact of changes
in community environment or policies on physical activity. Findings
are expected to inform environmental and policy changes that will
promote active living among Americans. This program is encouraged
to encourage those from fields such as exercise science, public
health, behavioral sciences, health care, recreation, geography,
economics, policy studies, and education to form interdisciplinary
teams to identify environmental factors and policies that are
related to physical activity.

Memorial Research Grant

Graduate students and professionals
in the fields of psychology, education, sociology, and African
American studies may apply for the Lydia Donaldson Tutt-Jones
Memorial Research Grant. Grant awards totaling $2,000 for a one
year period are intended to support research that identifies attitudinal
and behavioral contributors to African American academic success.

Agency: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
Proposal Deadline: August 15, December 15, and April 15
annually
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)
pilot grants are intended to provide seed money for new research
projects. Grants can be directed towards research on suicide from
a variety of disciplines including psychology, sociology, nursing,
genetics, psychiatry, neurobiology, and many others. Pilot grants
are not intended to support the development or implementation
of prevention programs, educational programs, treatments, or other
interventions that do not have a significant research component.
Grants may be awarded to investigators of any academic rank as
well as to those who do not have previous suicide research experience.
Grants provide up to $10,000 per year for a two-year period or
$20,000 for one year.
