Institutional, University-Wide, or Cross-Disciplinary Opportunities

NASA Faculty Fellowship Program

Agency: National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Deadline: March 8, 2006

The NASA Faculty Fellowship Program (NFFP) provides faculty with the opportunity during the summer to engage in research, at one of the seven participating NASA Centers or the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, that contributes to America’s civil space program including NASA’s exploration, science, space operations and aeronautics research missions. Participation may lead to future research funding opportunities to be conducted at the home institution as well as the identification of NASA opportunities for students. A typical research fellowship award is expected to be $1,200 a week for 10 weeks for a maximum stipend of $12,000. A relocation allowance will be provided to those fellows who live more than fifty miles from their assigned Center. Reasonable travel expenses for one round-trip will also be reimbursed for fellows who receive the relocation allowance. Total travel allowance for both relocation and travel depends on the locality and agreement between the fellow and the Center. Applicants must be U.S. citizens (U.S. Permanent Residents are not eligible to participate) and tenured or tenure-track faculty members. A Ph.D. in an engineering, mathematics or science discipline applicable to NASA research and/or technology development needs is highly desirable. Eligible faculty may apply for a fellowship at no more than two NASA Centers, including the Jet Propulsion Lab. Women and underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities in science, technology, engineering or match disciplines are strongly encouraged to apply. Previous NASA Faculty Fellowship Program (NFFP) participants may also apply. Participants are expected to conduct a research presentation or seminar near the end of the fellowship period and write a final report on the results/outcomes of the fellowship. Research opportunities may be in such areas as computer and information sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, materials science, GIS, and science and technology education, depending on the particular center. A listing of the types of opportunities available at the various centers as well as application information can be found at theURL listed below.

Partnerships in Character Education

Agency: United States Department of Education
Deadline: April 10, 2006

The purpose of the United States Department of Education Partnerships in Character Education program is to assist eligible entities (see following for eligibility information) in designing and implementing character education programs that are able to be integrated into classroom instruction and to be consistent with state academic content standards and are able to be carried out in conjunction with other educational reform efforts. These character education programs must take into consideration the view of parents, students, students with disabilities, and other members of the community, including members of private and nonprofit organizations.

This competition includes one absolute priority (to which all applicants must respond in order to be considered for funding) and one invitational priority. The absolute priority is for the design and implementation of character education programs that: (1) are able to be integrated into classroom instruction and to be consistent with State academic contents standards; and (2), are able to be carried out in conjunction with other educational reform efforts. The invitational priority is for projects proposing an evaluation plan that is based on rigorous scientifically based research methods to assess the effectiveness of a particular intervention. Note that no additional points are awarded to applicants addressing this invitational priority.

Eligibility Note: Towson University, on its own, is not eligible to apply to this program. The University could, however, apply in partnership with other entities. Eligible applicants are

  • State educational agencies (SEAs), in partnership with one or more local educational agencies (LEAs) or an SEA in partnership with one or more LEAs and nonprofit organizations or entities, including an institution of higher education
  • An LEA or consortium of LEAS or an LEA in partnership with one or more nonprofit organizations or entities, including an institution of higher education

Approximately $16,000,000 is available for this program this year, for approximately 35 awards. The estimated range of awards is $500,000 - $750,000 for SEAs and $250,000 - $500,000 for LEAs. The estimated average size of awards is $600,000 for each 12-month budget period for SEAs and $350,000 for each 12-month budget period for LEAs. SEAs may not apply for less than $500,000 for a single budget period (there is no minimum application amount for LEAs). The project period is up to 48 months, of which no more than 12 months may be used for planning and program design.
