    Announcement from the Office of University Research Services

Reminder: Research Monetary Awards and Teaching Innovation Grants for Spring 2010

Agency:            Towson University Faculty Development and Research Committee
Deadlines:       October 15, 2009

The Faculty Development and Research Committee (FDRC) is pleased to announce its call for applications for Research Monetary Awards and Teaching Innovation Grants for use during the spring semester 2010. Applications will be accepted through 5:00 pmThursday, October 15, 2009.  This is the first of three competitions this fiscal year, with two additional deadlines at the beginning of March and May 2010.

Research Monetary Awards provide support for projects leading to a scholarly product, such as a proposal to an external funding source, or a publication, presentation, invention, composition, performance, or exhibition. Teaching Innovation Grants are designed to encourage faculty to develop new classroom initiatives that are grounded in current research on teaching and learning.  Awards provide up to $5,000 to be used for project-related expenses, such as research assistants, supplies, and travel, and will be made available upon approval of awards. All funds awarded under this application round must be expended within 12 months of the award date, though requests for extensions may be considered by the Committee.

Full program guidelines and applications for both programs are available online.   All applications must have signatory approval from both the department chair and college dean upon submission. An original and eight copies of completed application forms and accompanying documentation as described in the application form should be submitted to the Office of University Research Services, 7800 York Road, Room 225.

    Green and Healthy Homes Technical Studies Program

Agency:        Department of Housing and Urban Development
Release:       November 17, 2009

This program aims to fund cooperative agreements to improve our knowledge of the effects green building has on: 1) indoor environmental quality, and 2) occupant health, with a particular focus on children and other sensitive populations in low income households. To date, there have been only a handful of studies which have used research methods to quantify the effects of green development on household hazards and occupant health. Preliminary research indicates that there is reason to expect that some green building practices can lead to improvements in indoor environmental quality and associated improvements in the health of occupants. It is expected that benefits would be most likely observed for respiratory health outcomes and reductions in irritation-related symptoms (e.g., throat and eye irritation, headache).

Approximately $2.4 million in FY 2009 is available for this initiative. Only one application will be accepted from any given organization for a given project under this grant program. Subject to available funding, approximately 4 to 7 awards are anticipated ranging from $350,000 to $700,000 each for the entire period of performance. Cost sharing or “matching” is not required; however, applicant “leveraging”
contributions are encouraged. The start date for new awards is expected to be not later than February 1, 2010. The period of performance cannot exceed 36 months from the date of award.

    • Integrate homeland security educational activities across agencies engaged in relevant academic research;
    • Nurture  a homeland security science and engineering workforce;
    • Transfer new discoveries in science and mathematics from DHS sponsored Centers of Excellence to the US population. DHS sponsored Centers of Excellence can be found at: www.dhs.gov/xres/programs/editorial_0498.shtm
