Please note for all proposals that must be submitted via Grants.gov,
the Office of University Research Services must have the final
complete proposal, with all required attachments, no later
than 48 hours prior to the agency deadline. Because of the
higher possibility of technical difficulties with this new
submission engine, the OURS cannot guarantee that proposals
received later than 48 hours prior to the deadline will be
submitted on time. Please direct any questions to the Office
of University Research Services, 4-2236 or ours@towson.edu.

Reminder: Research Monetary Awards and Teaching Innovation Grants for Spring 2010
Agency: Towson University Faculty Development and Research Committee
Deadlines: October 15, 2009
The Faculty Development and Research Committee
(FDRC) is pleased to announce its call for applications
for Research Monetary Awards and Teaching Innovation
Grants for use during the spring semester 2010. Applications
will be accepted through 5:00 pmThursday,
October 15, 2009. This is the first
of three competitions this fiscal year, with two
additional deadlines at the beginning of March and
May 2010.
Research Monetary Awards provide support for projects
leading to a scholarly product, such as a proposal
to an external funding source, or a publication, presentation,
invention, composition, performance, or exhibition.
Teaching Innovation Grants are designed to encourage
faculty to develop new classroom initiatives that are
grounded in current research on teaching and learning. Awards
provide up to $5,000 to be used for project-related
expenses, such as research assistants, supplies, and
travel, and will be made available upon approval of
awards. All funds awarded under this application round
must be expended within 12 months of the award date,
though requests for extensions may be considered by
the Committee.
Full program guidelines and applications for both programs
are available online. All applications must
have signatory approval from both the department chair
and college dean upon submission. An original and eight
copies of completed application forms and accompanying
documentation as described in the application form
should be submitted to the Office of University Research
Services, 7800 York Road, Room 225.

Institutional, University Wide, or Cross-Disciplinary Opportunities
Academic Research Enhancement Award
Agency: National Institutes of Health
Release: October 25, 2009, February 25, 2010, and June 25, 2010
The purpose of the Academic Research Enhancement
Award (AREA) program is to stimulate research in
educational institutions that provide baccalaureate
or advanced degrees for a significant number of the
Nation's research scientists, but that have not been
major recipients of NIH support. These AREA grants
create opportunities for scientists and institutions
otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in
NIH programs, to contribute to the Nation's biomedical
and behavioral research effort. AREA grants are intended
to support small-scale health-related research projects
proposed by faculty members of eligible, domestic
institutions. Active involvement of undergraduate
and graduate students in the proposed research is
encouraged, and reviewers will consider whether the
proposed project will expose undergraduate (preferably,
if available) and graduate students to meritorious
research. However, the application should not
focus on training objectives and training plans should
not be provided. This is a research grant program
and not a training or fellowship program.
Under a recent modification to the AREA program,
NIH has increased the allowable costs from $150,000
total direct costs to $300,000 direct costs for up
to three years of funding.

Behavioral
Science Track Award for Rapid Transition
(B/START) (R03)
Agency: National
Institutes of Health/National Institute
on Drug Abuse
Deadline: October
16, 2009
The National Institute on Drug Abuse
(NIDA), through the issuance of this
FOA seeks to facilitate the entry of
beginning investigators into the field
of behavioral science research. NIDA
invites newly independent investigators
to submit applications for small-scale,
exploratory, or pilot research projects
related to NIDA's behavioral sciences
mission. All areas of behavioral
research related to drug abuse are sought
under this announcement including (a)
animal and human basic behavioral research
aimed at elucidating underlying behavioral
mechanisms, determinants, and correlates
of drug abuse and characterizing the
consequences of drug abuse and addiction;
(b) research incorporating neural and
other biological approaches if the research
has a primary focus on behavior; (c)
drug abuse epidemiology, risk,
and protective factors, treatment, prevention,
and drug abuse services; and (d) behavioral
research on the intersection of drug
abuse and HIV/AIDS and other infectious
diseases.
This FOA will use the NIH Small Research
Grant (R03) award mechanism. The Project
Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI)
will be solely responsible for planning,
directing, and executing the proposed
project. The project period is
not to exceed one year and a budget for
direct costs of up to three $25,000 modules,
or $75,000 total, may be requested. Commensurate
Facilities and Administrative (F&A)
costs are allowed. Funding of B/START
awards is relatively rapid, i.e., within
approximately six months of the date
of receipt of the application.
