CGSR faculty fellowship expands research opportunities in support of cancer survivors
Towson,
MD (February 3, 2010)— On
January 30, Mary Sharon Curran, clinical
assistant professor in the Department
of Nursing, received a Volunteer Service
Award from the Ulman
Cancer Fund for Young Survivors (UCF).
In a relationship that began in 2005,
Curran and UCF have partnered to develop
services that address the unique needs
of young cancer survivors (ages 15
to 39) and their caregivers. Curran
and her partners at the UCF work to
assess the needs of both groups and
assist in providing support, education
and networking opportunities.
As a 2008 recipient of the College of
Graduate Studies Faculty Fellowship,
Curran initiated a pilot study aimed
at investigating the effectiveness of
support services offered to young adult
cancer survivors living in Baltimore
City, specifically targeting those with
socioeconomic disparities. In June of
that year, Young Adults Embracing Survivorship
(YES) was created. Working in collaboration
with UCF, Y of Central Maryland, University
of Maryland Cancer Greenebaum Center,
and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society,
Curran will evaluate the programs’ effectiveness.
With the preliminary results from thispilot,
Curran hopes to pursue external funding
through the National Cancer Institute
and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
