Teaching (MAT) – General Education - Elementary

Before You Apply

  • Have you submitted your transcripts to the MAT office for an analysis?

    A transcript analysis determines the content area prerequisites you may be required to take in addition to MAT program course work. While an analysis can be completed when application materials are received, prior completion of the analysis speeds up the application process.

  • Please send a brief cover letter stating your intended area of concentration with your name, address, email address and telephone number. Also include an official or unofficial copy (whichever is easiest) of your transcripts from all two- and four-year colleges you have attended. If you submit official transcripts to the MAT office, they will be shared with the Graduate School. Please mail to:

Admission Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
  • A 3.00 GPA is required for full admission. A GPA between 2.75 and 2.99 may qualify the applicant for conditional admission. GPA calculations for admission are based upon the cumulative units of the degree or the last 60 units of undergraduate and post-baccalaureate study.
  • An interview with the program director may be required.

An acceptance decision cannot be made until all application materials have been received:

    **Electronic copies of scores are not received by the Admissions office. Please have a hard copy of the score report mailed to your address which you can then copy and include with your mailed application materials.


  • A brief (1-2 page) admission essay in which the applicant discusses reasons for entering the teaching profession.
  • Two professional narrative letters of recommendation. Recommendations must be from supervisors or professors (Hard copies or online recommendations accepted).
  • Resume or a curriculum vita

Applying for the One-Year Option

If you are applying for the One-Year option, it is highly recommended that all application materials are received by the Graduate School at least two weeks prior to the March 15th deadline. A maximum of two uncompleted prerequisite courses may be pending when classes begin. Space limitations apply.

The Special Education Track is only available as an Extended Year option.

Application Dates

Application materials may be submitted year round. For timely admission, all application materials should be received by the Graduate School:

March 15 – to begin the Extended Year or One-Year option in the Summer semester
May 15 – to begin the Extended Year option in the Fall semester
October 15 – to begin the Extended Year option in the Spring semester
