Teaching (M.A.T.) - General Education - Secondary
What is an M.A.T.?
Towson University is a flagship institution for teacher education and a national leader in innovative approaches to preparing educators and administrative leaders. The Towson University Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) is a program that provides the necessary education and experience to enable recent graduates of bachelor or graduate degree programs, as well as career professionals, to successfully enter the teaching profession.
Students receive extensive, school-based training in an award-winning local professional development school network.
Select Your Format
Through the M.A.T., you will integrate a solid foundation of subject matter expertise with the most current knowledge on teaching and learning, including assessment, literacy and essential dispositions for educators. The M.A.T. may be completed in two ways. The fast track, intensive one-year program requires a full-time commitment to courses and field placements, and encompasses a summer, fall and extended spring term. The part-time program allows you to design a course load to fit your schedule. Classes for the part-time program are usually offered in the evening. Students enrolled in the part-time program complete the degree requirements in two to seven years.
Gain Classroom Experience
Gain classroom experience and one-on-one mentoring through professional development school partnerships with local public schools. You will create and present a portfolio that demonstrates attainment of national performance standards in lieu of a master's thesis. The program prepares you to meet state teacher certification requirements in a content-specific field within the general education track of Secondary Education.
