Music Education (M.S.)


The Master of Science in music education is designed to provide students a strong grounding in music education as well as provide flexibility to choose electives from theory, history, and performance.

There are two plans leading to completion of the degree.

  • Plan A: MS in Music Education with Thesis (minimum 34 units).
    • 24 units of required courses including 6 units of Thesis,
    • 10 units of electives.
  • Plan B: MS in Music Education with Graduate Project (minimum 34 units).
    • 19 units of required courses including 1 unit of graduate project (paper, recital, composition, or practicum)
    • 15 units of electives.

Many students elect to work concurrently in an area of their choice while also earning a Certificate of Music and/or completing Post-Baccalaureate studies leading to earning Maryland Public School P-12 teacher licensing.

Courses are offered in the evening. The MUED summer workshop and Certificate of Music courses may be counted as electives in the program.
