Reading (M.Ed.)

This program is also offered at:

The master's program in Reading prepares you to be a reading specialist, primarily for elementary and secondary education. The program also prepares you for literacy work in community colleges, industry, adult education programs, commercial education centers and private practice. You will develop a wide array of abilities for enhancing literacy for all learners and build the competencies to coach classroom teachers, paraprofessionals and parents. You will learn to:

  • provide specialized literacy instruction and assessment, in cooperation with other professionals, to students at all levels and with a variety of needs.
  • offer literacy services individually or in groups.
  • communicate with and coach colleagues, parents and the community about literacy issues.
  • Read and interpret literacy research.

You can complete the master's program as a full- or part-time student. Most courses are offered in the early evening one night per week. At the Towson campus, all required courses are offered in both fall and spring terms, and many are offering during the summer. The entire program is also offered in Southern Maryland (contact Alyssa Zumpano at azumpano@towson.edu for more information). We also offer components of our program at other convenient sites through the Towson Learning Network.

The 36-unit program includes nine required courses and three electives, two of which must be in the area of literacy. Towson's program does not subscribe to a particular position on reading, but it closely reflects the broad, comprehensive knowledge and pedagogical skills outlined in the 2003 Standards for Reading Professionals developed by the International Reading Association.

The M.Ed. in reading is one major component in the Maryland State Department of Education certification as a reading specialist. Your degree can prepare you for a career as an academic coach, instructional support teacher, curriculum specialist, or other leadership positions in education. By choosing electives carefully, you can also prepare to take the Praxis as an ESL teacher or advance your knowledge of technology integration. Furthermore, many of our courses are aligned with MSDE recertification requirements.

Towson Reading Clinic

The program includes a practicum experience for two terms in Towson's Reading Clinic, which serves local elementary and secondary school children from private and public schools, as well as adults. You will work one-on-one with students in small tutoring rooms attached to observation rooms, where professors can observe your techniques and offer feedback.
