Women's and Gender Studies (M.S.) – Women, Health and Sexuality

Degree Requirements

The M.S. in Women’s Studies requires 36 units.

Required Courses (9 units)

 

WMST 603 The Diversity of Women (3)
WMST 607 Advanced Feminist Theory (3)
Women’s Studies Skills Course (3 units)
WMST 609 Applied Research Methods and Skills (3)

 

Concentration Courses (21 units)

  1. Women’s Studies required course: WMST 613
  2. One additional course from the approved short concentration list.
  3. Electives chosen from an approved list in consultation with an adviser (refer to “Electives” below in selected concentration).

NOTE: Graduate students are allowed up to 9 units of 500-level course work.

Culminating: Project Thesis, Internship or “Two-Course Option with Portfolio” (6 units)

Students must take 6 units in one of the following:

  1. WMST 796 Internship (6)
  2. WMST 897 Thesis (6)
    or
    WMST 898 (3 units, over 2 terms) and WMST 899 Thesis Continuum (1), if needed
  3. Two additional courses, Portfolio and Essay (6)
Two Course Option Requirements:

Six units of additional course work beyond 30 units, for a total of 36 units of course work; compilation of a portfolio of student’s course work; 10-15 page reflective essay on the portfolio. (Complete requirements for the portfolio and essay, deadlines for its completion and details on the evaluation process are in “Guidelines for Portfolio Review” in the Women’s Studies Graduate Student Handbook.)

NOTE: Students selecting this option must meet with their advisers to consult on the selection of the two additional courses and the rationale for their selection. They must also sign a declaration form for this option.

All Women's and Gender Studies courses count toward this concentration.  In addition to WMST courses, any of the affiliated courses below can be chosen to meet the required 15 hours of electives for the Women, Health and Sexuality concentration.
